The Pick of the Day is a 2006 Hummer H1 Alpha Open Top listed by a British Columbia, Canada dealership on ClassicCars.com.

The Hummer H1 is such an unforgettable and instantly recognizable vehicle that it’s hard to believe it was discontinued nearly 20 years ago. In 2006, it went out on top – literally – as the H1 Alpha.

As an H1, it already had the presence that only a boxy four-ton vehicle can have. It had the longstanding love of another alpha (male), Arnold Schwarzenegger. Thanks to its Duramax 6.6-liter turbo-diesel V8 and a commercial-grade Allison 1000-series five-speed automatic transmission, the Alpha also had the grunt to go with its girth and grit. The H1 Alpha’s 300 horsepower and 520 lb-ft of torque were 46- and 18-percent increases, respectively.

There were additional benefits to that major upgrade. The H1 Alpha looked even more imposing than it did before because AM General had to raise the body two inches to fit the new engine and transmission. The 0-60 mph time dropped from 16.5 to 13.5 seconds. At the same time, fuel economy went up; combined with the dual fuel tanks’ higher capacity of 51.5 gallons, the H1 Alpha now had an estimated cruising range of 570 miles.

The GCWR (Gross Combined Weight Rating) increased by one ton to 17,300 pounds. Not only did the Allison automatic come with a tow/haul mode, but it also contributed to a significantly higher crawl ratio of 45:1. To ensure the underpinnings could handle the additional power under the hood, AM General equipped the portal axles with helical-cut gears, beefed up the half-shafts, and enlarged the diameter of the inboard brake rotors from 10.7 to 12 inches.

This particular Hummer H1 Alpha Open Top model left AM General’s Mishawaka, Indiana plant finished in Flame Red Pearl and equipped with a beige removable soft top. The Ebony and Brown leather interior has heated front seats, a Monsoon audio system with a six-disc in-dash CD changer, and the controls for the Central Tire Inflation System that’s connected to 37-inch Kumhos.

The optional Adventure Package makes this Alpha even more ready for the great outdoors by adding a 12,000-pound front winch, 17-inch dual-beadlock forged aluminum wheels, and front and rear Eaton Elockers.

Since it was new, this one-year-only H1 has covered 3,945 miles (6,348 kilometers), which partly explains the $211,375 asking price. Expect to increase your total purchase budget if you decide to buy it and have it trucked down to the United States. Already in Canada and ready to drop that kind of cash? Enjoy the trip home from the dealership and the many adventures ahead.
