Featured on AutoHunter, the online auction platform driven by ClassicCars.com, is this 1970 Volkswagen Type 2.

If you’re looking for a vehicle that can double as a bedroom, a kitchen, and a living room, you’re in luck. The Volkswagen Type 2 could best be described as “versatility in motion.” A dealer in Gladstone, Oregon, is proud to offer a Type 2 that has been nicely restored both cosmetically and mechanically. The auction for it will end on Friday, August 23.

The listing states that the body was restored in 2017, but the interior is where this Type 2 really shines. There is a smart use of space everywhere you turn. The cargo compartment features wood trim, curtains, a sink, power outlets, a collapsible table, and seating provisions. You know the old saying, “It has everything but the kitchen sink”? Well, this vehicle includes the kitchen sink.

The Volkswagen Type 2 (over the years, known under the names Kombi, Samba, Microbus, Transporter, and more) is one of the most recognizable vehicles in the collector-car landscape, and for good reason. Its production run started nearly 75 years ago in 1950 and continues even today in select world markets. The vehicle was first launched as a “forward control light commercial vehicle,” and it has been offered in variants that include passenger vans, panel vans, pickups, and recreational vehicles.

Model year 1967 was particularly noteworthy because the Type 2 received some styling updates. The split front windshield was abandoned and replaced with a one-piece wrap-around unit. Engineering changes included a new 12-volt electrical system, the introduction of half-shaft axles, and larger engines.

The documentation that accompanies the vehicle for sale lists the original owner as having resided in La Mesa, California, just outside San Diego. The Type 2’s current location is about 10 miles south of Portland. It’s possible the vehicle spent the majority of its life in the gentle climates of the West Coast.

According to the listing, a restoration was performed in 2017 and the vehicle was refinished in its current two-tone beige and white. In certain enthusiast circles, the Type 2 van is called a “bread loaf,” and it is easy to see why. The colors and silhouette here make the similarity clear.

At the rear, the air-cooled 1,600cc flat-four engine is said to have been rebuilt in 2016. A four-speed manual transaxle sends torque to the rear wheels. The listing says that the vehicle has been driven 11,000 miles since the mechanical work was performed, so it’s ready to rock and roll to your nearest campground or beach for some late-summer fun.
