According to some people, there are two types of vehicles out there: built and bought. The built kind are the products of determination, ingenuity, blood, sweat, and tears (and dozens of yelled profanities). Bought cars are assembled by a checkbook and an experienced professional at a shop. The upcoming McLaren P1 kit from Lego Technic truly is a hybrid – and not just because the car it’s based on uses gas and electric power to zoom to 186 mph in 16.5 seconds. Once you’ve bought it, you can build your very own 1:8-scale version of the 903-horsepower hypercar.
You won’t need a special uniform or years of specialized training to do it, but you will need a chunk of time to complete the build. The newest addition to the Lego Technic Ultimate Car Concept Series was developed in collaboration with McLaren Automotive – all 3,893 pieces of it.
When those are finally assembled, you’ll have an impressive display piece with functional dihedral doors, the Lego Technic version of the P1’s twin-turbo 3.8-liter V8 and seven-speed transmission, suspension components, and an adjustable rear wing. According to McLaren, you’ll also have “a unique serial number which unlocks special behind-the-scenes content.”
The 375-unit run of the full-size McLaren P1 sold out a long time ago, but you’ll be able to buy the $449.99 Lego Technic McLaren P1 set soon. Look for it on www.LEGO.com/McLaren and in Lego stores starting August 1. If you’re a Lego Insider and you get it between August 1 and August 7, you’ll receive the Lego Technic McLaren P1 Logo kit as a bonus. It looks as if you’ll have to free up a little more room in your schedule – and on the table you build Legos on.
