OAKLAND — Meat spilled onto Interstate 880 in Oakland on Friday, fouling the afternoon commute and causing four crashes, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The incident happened around 4:45 p.m. in northbound lanes just south of 29th Avenue. An unsecured load of what appeared to be chicken meat fell off a truck and splattered across the freeway, CHP Officer Adib Zeid said, adding that the truck did not stop.
Zeid said the slippery conditions caused four crashes — three involving cars and one involving a motorcycle. No injuries were reported.
All lanes of the interstate were initially blocked. The CHP opened the far right lane to ease the backup, but motorists were urged to drive slowly through the area.
A California Department of Transportation crew was dispatched to the scene to clean up the meat.
The far left lane was reopened around 7 p.m. and the others were reopened by 9:30 p.m.
