A good sign
Assemblymember Alex Lee introduced a bill Feb. 12 that directs the California Department of Transportation to create directional highway signs for the California School for the Deaf (CSD) in Fremont.
“AB 2367 was inspired by the advocacy of CSD students,” said Lee, whose district includes Milpitas. “This bill is a prime example of how young people can participate in our democracy, and it’s great to see the passion of CSD students in pushing forward their cause.”
CSD enrolls about 350 deaf and hard-of-hearing students and offers education in American Sign Language and English.
Last fall CSD students presented a bill proposal to state legislators, including Lee, to install freeway signs directing people to the school in the hopes that the signage will increase awareness of the campus, located near highways 680, 238 and 880.
“There are rare opportunities for my students to engage in making big changes in their communities. This project really resonated with them,” said U.S. government teacher Molly Christensen, who spearheaded the project with her 12th-grade students. “I’m seeing their eyes open to the idea that they must stay actively involved in our democracy to ensure that their representatives, like Assemblymember Alex Lee, are responsive to their needs.”
Peaceful Poets
The Peaceful Poets, a Milpitas-based group of writers and appreciators of poetry, will meet Feb. 29 at 5:30 p.m. in the Milpitas Library Conference Room. The group welcomes all who are interested to its free meeting.
