A significant majority of registered voters (61%) indicated that President Joe Biden should make way for someone else to run in 2024, while just under a quarter (24%) thought that he should run for reelection, according to a Hill-HarrisX poll.
While more than a third (37%) of Democrats thought that he should make room for someone else, 45% indicated that the president should run again.
More than half (59%) of independents felt that Biden should make way for another 2024 candidate, while only 17% believed he should go for a second term.
A whopping 87% of Republicans thought Biden should step aside to make way for someone else, while just 8% indicated that he should run for reelection.
“This survey was conducted online within the United States from November 9 – 10 among 921 registered voters by HarrisX,” according to a description about the poll. “The sampling margin of error of this poll is plus or minus 3.2 percentage points. The results reflect a nationally representative sample of registered voters. Results were weighted for age, gender, region, race/ethnicity, income, political party, education, ideology and area type where necessary to align them with their actual proportions in the population.”
The president, who has been struggling with poor approval ratings, will be in his eighties by the time he finishes his current term.
Earlier this year, the 78-year-old became the oldest individual in history sworn in as president, according to the New York Times.
Biden, who earlier in his career spent more than three decades as a U.S. Senator from Delaware before serving two terms as vice president alongside President Barack Obama, will turn 79 this month. He will turn 82 shortly after the 2024 election and would be 86 at the end of a second term.
Less than half of people in an I&I/TIPP poll of adults considered Biden to be “mentally sharp.” Only 19.3% strongly agreed with the description of Biden as “mentally sharp,” while 23% somewhat agreed, 36.9% strongly disagreed, and 13.6% somewhat disagreed.
