Focus Features has just released the first trailer for the feature film, Downton Abbey: A New Era.& As the world is about to usher in a new decade, we see the Crawley’s and the rest of the household adapting to new transport, entertainment, and a new location. We’re off to France!
Downton Abbey took to Twitter to share with the fans, captioning the trailer with, “You are cordially invited to the grandest escape of the year. Watch the teaser trailer for #DowntonAbbey: A New Era, and see it only in theaters March 18.”
Fans around the world began dissecting every second of the teaser, speculating on what’s in store! Cassidy exclaimed, “Tom and Lucy get married!!” Sage declared, “if they keep demoting thomas from butler just to make room for mr. carson i’m going to start a riot.” Emma can’t contain herself, “this is exactly what we need right now shaking screaming crying.” Donna’s got a crush! Can’t wait! I love the characters in the series & movies. Call me crazy but Mr. Bates, well, there is just something about him… sigh*** ;)”
Downton creator Julian Fellowes gives a few hints as to what we can expect. “It’s really a new era. The further the ’20s went along, the more the world was changing in so many ways. Everything from entertainment to transport was really different by the end of the ’20s. That’s what we’re referring to in that.”
“As we know from the last film, Mary may not be the titular head of the household, but she is effectively running the show. We take that further. We’re trying to mark the change – the fact that Crawleys of Downton are nearly in the 1930s, which is merely the beginning of the modern world.”
“I like the idea that people go into the movie and have a great two hours and then go out to have dinner. That seems to me to be a good thing,” Fellowes says. “If we are useful for cheering people up and giving them an easy time of it, that doesn’t bother me.”
The original principal cast of Downton Abbey will all once again return for the second film. In addition to Hugh Bonneville, Laura Carmichael, Jim Carter, Brendan Coyle, Michelle Dockery, Kevin Doyle, Joanne Froggatt, Harry Hadden-Paton, Robert James-Collier, Allen Leech, Phyllis Logan, Elizabeth McGovern, Sophie McShera, Tuppence Middleton, Lesley Nicol, Maggie Smith, Imelda Staunton, Penelope Wilton, new cast members Hugh Dancy, Laura Haddock, Nathalie Baye, Dominic West and Jonathan Zacca&ï will be joining the cast.
Downton Abbey creator Academy-Award winner Julian Fellowes has once again written the film’s screenplay, with Emmy and BAFTA Award-winning Gareth Neame and Emmy Award-winning Liz Trubridge back to produce with Fellowes. BAFTA and Emmy nominated director Simon Curtis (My Week with Marilyn) has joined the filmmaking team to direct the sequel. Focus Features will release Downton Abbey: A New Era in theaters on March 18 2022.
