Do you lament about the state of today’s automobile industry? Do all cars look the same to you? Then witness the Nissan Hyper Punk concept, which was just unveiled at the 2023 Japan Mobility Show (née Tokyo Motor Show).
As if you need another reason to lady-dog and moan about how today’s cars suck lemons, the Hyper Punk is an all-electric (obvs!) compact crossover tailored for — get this — “content creators, influencers, artists, and those who embrace style and innovation.” Does that include people who try to get free meals for an online review?
What grabbed our attention with this concept are the funky 23-inch wheels. No, the tires are not triangular, but the wheels give that effect, plus they complement the “multifaceted and polygonal” surfaces. The tones and shades of silver vary depending on your point of view yet, according to Nissan, its aerodynamics are contemporary, so don’t infer efficiency takes a back seat to design.
In another nod to making you feel old, Nissan says the “origami-styled elements mirror Japanese design and create an interior space where digital and art are fused together.” Is that a modern way of saying, “You’ll really dig the dashboard design?” Onboard cameras capture outside scenery and use AI (just in case, artificial intelligence) to convert your vista to manga-style scenery (that’s the Japanese graphic novel style that you can see below or on this page for the Hyper Punk) or graphic patterns. That mix of reality and meta is projected on a three-screen display surrounding the driver. Sounds distracting!
Since the Hyper Punk is created for job descriptions that didn’t exist until recently, it then should be no surprise that this EV has been designed as a mobile creative studio with a cabin that provides seamless Internet connectivity for your electronic devices. Hey, Siri, you can create on the go! Plus, with AI and headrest biosensors, the Hyper Punk can detect your mood (grumpy?) and find music and ambient lighting to match — perhaps something that will boost your energy and creativity.
Starting on October 25, the opening day of the 2023 Japan Mobility Show, the Hyper Punk and other crop of Nissan concepts (Hyper Urban, Hyper Adventure, and Hyper Tourer) will become available on Fortnite under the name “Electrify the World.” What’s Fortnite?
That’s for another day.
