Reparations won’t solve
slavery’s legacy
Re: “Payment to offset slavery unpopular” (Page A1, Sept. 11).
Elissa Miolene’s Sept. 11 article on reparation says, “Voters who oppose the idea said it would be unfair to ask today’s taxpayers to pay for past wrongs.” That is true.
On the battlefield, our forefathers poured out their blood that the institutions of the Confederate States of America would pass away and that those who were enslaved and their descendants would forever be free. Today, some of the fruits of that shed blood are a former Black president, a Black vice president, Black Supreme Court justices, Black athletes with lucrative contracts, very successful Black entertainers and businessmen, and numerous elected Black state officials.
We are not guaranteed equal outcomes but equal opportunity to make free choices. Yes, there are inequalities to be fixed. Transferring money from the descendants of those who paid a blood price to the descendants who are now free is not the answer.

Help meet needs of
Contra Costa seniors
Re: “Opinion: Newsom must address malnutrition of aging population” (Feb. 3).
I am writing to bring attention to the need for volunteers in Contra Costa County to help with food deliveries and other wrap-around services for seniors.
Meals on Wheels Diablo Region is an organization dedicated to enhancing the lives of older adults in Contra Costa County by providing coordinated care that enables them to live independently and with dignity. They are currently seeking volunteers to help deliver meals and supportive services that keep seniors safe and independent at home. The COVID-19 pandemic has made it difficult for many seniors to access food and other essential services, and the need has continued to grow.
Volunteers are needed to deliver meals to homebound seniors, provide friendly visits, and help with other wrap-around services.
We would appreciate any support from the community to join our team, spread the word, and help us raise awareness about the urgency of this need.

Officials have time
to preserve Pac-12
Re: “Saturday Night Five: Utah, Oregon road wins highlight another stellar week (on the field) for the Pac-12” (Sept. 10).
The NCAA muckety mucks, if they notice how the Pac-12 teams are storming the Top 25 rankings, can still save the conference if they truly want.
They should block next year’s media rights deals and find a substitute arrangement with CBS, NBC (both their linear and streaming), and others that will honor geography and regional rivalries — perhaps The CW and Apple TV+. Include a simple NCAA press release to its athletes: You can go home again and play on the biggest stage.

Support Bosa contract?
Don’t gripe about prices
Re: “Bosa pact a big deal for him, 49ers’ hopes” (Page A1, Sept. 7).
To those who support Nick Bosa, his holdout and the large contract that he was just signed to, we better not hear a peep out of you when it comes to prices for tickets, parking or concessions at any future 49er game.
You’ve lost that ability to complain if you support player holdouts and big-money, guaranteed contracts like this. He could very well tear an ACL during the a game this season and all that money is wasted.
