Production has begun on a fresh reboot of The Munsters by Rob Zombie which will reintroduce the classic show’s characters in an all-new movie adaptation. After construction had completely finished on the set, which was designed specifically to look like 1313 Mockingbird Lane from the original TV show, Zombie unveiled three main cast members along with the characters they’ll be playing. Along with Jeff Daniel Phillips as Herman Munster and Sheri Moon Zombie as Lily, the reboot will also star Daniel Roebuck as The Count himself, Grandpa Munster.

Dan Roebuck recently opened up about his involvement in The Munsters in a Horror Geek Life interview. The actor couldn’t get very specific, but he did suggest that the movie will be a comedy, similar to the TV show, as what he’s hoping for is to get audiences “laughing” with The Munsters again. He also says that this new movie should be able to stand on its own next to the original series for fans to be able to enjoy the both of them separately for what they are.

“I really hope audiences walk away feeling entertained and laughing. That’s all we really hope for making any movie, well, unless it’s a drama. If all goes well and people really like it, maybe we’ll get the chance to do it again. I just hope people realize that they’ll have a whole new version of The Munsters that can live and co-exist side-by-side with the original version of The Munsters. No one wants to replace it, we all love it so much. We just want to shine a spotlight on it with our approach which I think is the best way to look at it.”

This might be a reboot in the sense that it’s a new filmmaker taking a fresh crack at the franchise with an all-new cast, but Rob Zombie is aiming to make this movie very faithful to the original TV show. Zombie has already made this evident with his social media posts showing the set, which is a complete recreation of the original house at 1313 Mockingbird Lane. In the HGL interview, Dan Roebuck praises Zombie’s work on the set and says that’s just one small part of just how “perfectly” Zombie is adapting the source material.

“I love how Rob was just showing glimpses of their progress. Then I was just blown away by what they’d done. Based on the photo he put out, you know I was able to stand in front of that house and it was great. It’s as close to the original house it could ever be. That street used to be on the Universal backlot, but it was moved to make way for Amblin Entertainment. The house has been moved and then built over numerous times; he started from scratch and it was done perfectly, just perfection. That house should give you an idea of the detail with which this brilliant director is approaching the material.”

The Munsters does not have a release date at this time, but with production underway, we’ll hopefully get to take a visit to the new 1313 Mockingbird Lane sometime next year. It will reportedly be released in movie theaters and on Peacock by Universal. You can read the full interview with Dan Roebuck at Horror Geek Life.
