51-year-old Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced his separation from his 48-year-old wife Sophie Gregoire Trudeau after 18 years.
Trudeau posted a statement on his official Instagram account about the development.
“Sophie and I would like to share the fact that after many meaningful and difficult conversations, we have made the decision to separate,” read the statement.
“As always, we remain a close family with deep love and respect for each other and for everything we have built and will continue to build,” the statement continued. “For the well-being of our children, we ask that you respect our and their privacy.”
The couple has two sons, 15-year-old Xavier and 9-year-old Hadrien, and one daughter, 14-year-old Ella-Grace.
Trudeau’s office released a statement saying that the couple “have worked to ensure that all legal and ethical steps with regards to their decision to separate have been taken.”
Sophie Trudeau is former model and television host. They were married in 2005, and Justin Trudeau was sworn into office in 2015.
The liberal prime minister has been a favorite target of ridicule for conservatives, especially for the heavy-handed lockdown response to the coronavirus pandemic and his support of the 2SLGBTQQIA+ agenda.
In July, Trudeau blamed right-wingers in the U.S. for the opposition to LGBTQ teachings in public school from Muslims in Canada.
“These are people on the far right who have consistently stood against Muslim rights and the Muslim community, but they are weaponizing the issue of LGBT, which is something that, yes, Islam has strong opinions on,” he said at the time.
A source close to the couple said they agreed to joint custody of the children.
