Nick Mason’s Saucerful of Secrets delivered one of the best tours of 2019, thrilling old-school Pink Floyd fans with set lists populated by the band’s often-overlooked (but still incredible) early material. (Read our review from that tour here.)
Now, the delightfully psychedelic rock group — led by Mason, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame drummer from Pink Floyd — is set to fly back into concert venues in 2022.
Saucerful of Secrets has announced dates for a 2022 North American tour.
And, thankfully for local Floyd fans, the trek includes a stop in the Bay Area.
Mason and company — guitarist Gary Kemp, bassist Guy Pratt, guitarist Lee Harris and keyboardist Dom Beken — performs Feb. 24 at the Fox Theater in Oakland.
Tickets are $55-$149.50 and go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday (Nov. 5), ticketmaster.com.
Granted, Saucerful of Secrets isn’t for every Floyd fan. Don’t go to the show expecting to hear “Shine On You Crazy Diamond,” “Wish You Were Here,” “Comfortably Numb,” “Money,” “Another Brick in the Wall (Part 2)” or any of the other Floyd favorites that still dominate classic rock radio.
Saucerful of Secrets differentiates itself from other Floyd projects — including the awesome ones that David Gilmour and Roger Waters have peddled through arenas and amphitheaters over the years — by focusing on material that came before the 1973 uber-breakout album “The Dark Side of the Moon.”
And there’s a lot of material there. “Dark Side” was actually the midway point in the band’s catalog — the eighth offering in the band’s 15 studio album catalog. Not everything from those early days is exceptional, but there are some truly magical moments to be found on such albums as 1967’s “The Piper at the Gates of Dawn” and 1971’s “Meddle.”
It’s the latter of which that gave the world “Echoes,” the tune that serves as the name of this tour.
