Leigh stays hot, routs Sobrato
In a league in which five of the 10 teams have identical records, one continues to keep everyone else looking up in the standings.
Leigh stretched its winning streak to seven on Thursday, cruising past host Sobrato 10-2 to maintain a two-game advantage in the Blossom Valley Athletic League’s Mt. Hamilton Division.
Five teams — Live Oak, Pioneer, Christopher, Branham and Willow Glen — are tied for second.
Dom Panella was Leigh’s offensive hero in the latest win, finishing 3 for 4 with two doubles and five RBIs as the San Jose school improved to 12-7 overall and 9-3 in the league.
Lance Takamura also went 3 for 4 for Leigh with a double and Ollie Obenour added two hits and scored three runs.
Leigh scored two in the first and two in the second to grab a 4-1 lead. The Longhorns added two more runs in the fifth and put the game away with four in the seventh.
Miles Lu pitched six innings for Leigh, allowing two runs (one earned) and three hits with five strikeouts.
Sobrato fell to 3-11-1, 0-10.
No. 11 Clayton Valley 8, Campolindo 4
Clayton Valley fell four runs behind after an inning before taking charge to beat host Campolindo in a Diablo Athletic League Foothill Division game.
Kyle Connelly and Ryder Helfrick each homered and Connelly added a triple as Clayton Valley improved to 12-4, 4-0.
Blake Robison hit a triple and scored a run for Campo, which slipped to 9-7-1, 2-2.
No. 19 Heritage 17, Deer Valley 2
Heritage won for the 13th time in 14 games, coasting on the road over Deer Valley to remain undefeated in Bay Valley Athletic League play.
Anthony Potestio went 3 for 3 with a home run, knocked in six runs and scored three runs to lead a Heritage offense that finished with 17 hits.
Gio Martini added two doubles and three RBIs as Heritage improved to 13-4, 6-0.
Lincoln Adams finished with two hits and an RBI for Deer Valley (5-12, 0-6).
Branham 7, Westmont 3
Trailing 3-1 after three innings, Branham charged back on its home field to beat Westmont as Matt Garcia went 2 for 3 with a double and a triple and Devin Gonzales had two hits and knocked in two runs to lead the way.
Colin Williams added two hits and scored three runs as Branham upped its record to 14-6 overall and 7-5 in the BVAL’s Mt. Hamilton Division.
Westmont dropped to 9-10, 4-9.
Branham scored a run in the fourth and five in the fifth to complete the comeback.
Santa Teresa 3, Pioneer 2
Robert Palomino’s two-out single in the visitor’s half of the seventh inning drove in the decisive run as Santa Teresa edged Pioneer in a BVAL Mt. Hamilton game.
Jacob Gilbreath had two hits and an RBI and Johnny Alvarez (two runs allowed, one earned) pitched a complete-game gem to lead the Saints.
Grayden Eister had three hits and scored a run for Pioneer, which fell to 11-7-1, 7-5.
Santa Teresa is 11-9, 6-6.
Willow Glen 6, Leland 1
Chase Ostrowski pitched a complete game, allowing one run and four hits, and Aiden Januario had two hits and knocked in a run to lead Willow Glen past visiting Leland in BVAL Mt. Hamilton play.
Willow Glen (12-7, 7-5) is in a five-way tie for second place.
Leland is 8-10, 4-7.
Softball
Burlingame 8, No. 6 Capuchino 6
Burlingame’s bats heated up in the top of the sixth as the Panthers rallied to upset Capuchino in a Peninsula Athletic League Bay Division game.
With Burlingame behind 5-1 after the fifth, Lily Grenier started the comeback with an RBI single. Kasey Lyons drove in another run on a fielder’s choice. Tatiyana Moraga cut the lead to one with another RBI single, and Emmi Cate knocked in two more to give Burlingame the lead.
Burlingame added two more runs on an error as a pop fly with two outs was mishandled.
Capuchino’s Nohemi Livingston went 2 for 5 with four RBIs, and shortstop Alexis Centeno finished 2 for 4.
Capuchino is 14-3 and 6-2 in the PAL Bay. Burlingame improved to 5-6, 2-6.
No. 8 College Park 3, No. 9 Clayton Valley 1
College Park senior Alexis Sealey allowed three hits as the Falcons (12-4, 4-0) remained atop the DAL Foothill standings after a close victory over Clayton Valley Charter (9-4, 1-1).
Senior Emma Wood went 2-3 with two RBIs for College Park, and junior Ava Davis batted 1 for 3 with an RBI. Samantha Theisen drove in CVC’s run.
No.16 Sequoia 11, Carlmont 0
Carlmont had heated up, riding a four-game winning streak as it entered Thursday’s league matchup with Sequoia. Two of those victories had been over No. 19 Hillsdale and No. 14 Westmont.
One more victory would move the Scots into second place in the league standings.
Instead, Sequoia cooled off Carlmont with a dominant victory that improved the Ravens to 12-2, 5-1 in the PAL-Bay. Carlmont dropped to 8-7 overall and 4-2 in the league.
The star of the night was Mackenzie Jackson, who hit her first two home runs of the season and drove in six RBIs to lead the Raven offense.
Ainsley Waddell was once again excellent for Sequoia, pitching all five innings of the run-ruled game and striking out 10. Emerson Seevers and Waddell each hit two doubles and combined to drive in three RBIs.
No. 15 Willow Glen 5, No. 11 Branham 1
What a difference three days can make. Branham began the week 4-0 in BVAL Mt. Hamilton play. By Thursday, losses to league rivals Westmont and Willow Glen dropped Branham to fourth in the standings.
Cianna Miranda and McKenna Campbell hit solo home runs for Willow Glen, Haley Ocumen went 2 for 3 and Katelyn Dilbeck was 2 for 4.
Willow Glen’s freshmen pitchers Lea Crawford and Alanna Clincy combined for seven strikeouts. Branham junior Abigail Fales hit a solo home run in the fourth inning.
Willow Glen improved to 11-4, 5-2. Branham fell to 10-6, 4-2.
Mt. Diablo 9, Campolindo 8
Campolindo’s frenzied rally came up just short in Mt. Diablo’s victory in Diablo Athletic League Mountain Division play. Trailing 8-1 entering the sixth inning, Campolindo scored seven runs in the final two innings.
However, one RBI by Mt. Diablo freshman Faith Sotelo in the bottom of the sixth ended up being the difference. Sophomore Dazzelynn Alon was 3 for 4 with a triple and two RBIs, and Linda Ochoa had three RBIs.
Campolindo’s Clara Hwang hit a double and drove in three runs, and third-baseman Cassidy Mintz had two RBIs and scored a run. Campolindo had only three hits but was aided by 11 Mt. Diablo errors.
Mt. Diablo is the top team in the DAL Mountain with a 4-3, 3-0 record, and Campolindo is in second place with a 2-5, 2-1 record.
