Big ol’ boats will never go out of style. Some are more worthy than others, with Buicks consistently checking all the boxes well into the 1970s. One of these is the Pick of the Day: a 1972 Buick Electra 225 Sport Coupe listed for sale on ClassicCars.com by a dealer in North Woodstock, Connecticut. (Click the link to view the listing)
In a time when full-size cars were getting bulkier and heavier, General Motors’ 1971 redesign of its full-size cars arguably was an improvement over the previous-generation cars. Plus, they withstood the test of time and government regulations quite well through 1976, which was quite a long time in GM years.
The Electra 225 was Buick’s top-of-the-line full-size series since 1959. For 1972, it was offered as a Sport Coupe (two-door hardtop) and four-door hardtop, plus there was a step-up called the Electra 225 Custom, which included the fancier Limited interior trimmings.
Detail differences differentiate the 1972 Electra from the inaugural 1971. Most noticeable are the grille and the parking lights. GM was into its second year of low-compression engines, which actually was mandated by the government for 1972. The standard 455 four-barrel in the Electra 225 was rated at 225 net horsepower with a single exhaust, 250 with duals.
This 1972 Electra 225 coupe features the standard automatic transmission, vinyl top, air conditioning, power windows, AM/FM radio, and that nifty Speed Alert that buzzes when you exceed a pre-selected speed. “Beautiful rust-free original-paint survivor,” claims the seller. “[A] very clean original car that was in dry storage for years. Never driven in winter.” Seller adds that the Electra runs and drives but the engine misfires.
Odometer is said to be 80,000, though instrument panel picture shows 73,687 miles. No word whether it flipped, but, considering claims of storage, we bet it’s original. Would you give $9,995 for it? Seems like a reasonable price for a highway cruiser.
