New York Police said that charges are pending against a middle school student who was caught on video ‘body-slamming’ a much smaller student to the ground.
The video shows the two students interacting with a school bus in the background and other students milling about when the bigger student grabs the other and slams him to the ground. He scurries away after the attack.
The video went viral on social media, where users identified the school as Cosgrove Middle School in Spencerport, a small village of about 3,600 people considered to be a suburb of Rochester.
One widely circulated version of the video garnered more than 2.3 million views on Tuesday.
A spokesperson for the district confirmed that a male 15-year-old student had “sought out” the 11-year-old middle school student and attacked him after students were dismissed Monday.
Ogden Police Chief Travis Gray said that the family of the student had filed charges on Tuesday morning but that police were made aware of the video on Monday evening.
“Because these boys are juveniles, we’re very limited in what we can do as far as speaking to them without their parents,” said Chief Gray. “We need to have the parents involved at every step of the road here. So our first step in the investigation was to speak to the victim and his family.”
He said that charges are anticipated in the incident and that the victim sustained minor injuries.
Superintendent Kristin Swann said in a letter to families that the student accused in the attack was “not in school” and that they were conducting their own investigation in accordance with student code of conduct.
“This kind of behavior is reprehensible. It simply cannot and will not be tolerated,” Swann wrote.
She added that the injured child was evaluated and any additional support needed would be provided.
“We are working closely with the school district and the victim, as well as the victim’s family, to determine the best course of action and to ensure justice for the victim is attained,” said Gray.
