Featured on AutoHunter, the online auction platform driven by ClassicCars.com, is this 1956 Continental Mark II. This hand-built two-door hardtop was reportedly owned by Les Brown (under the alias Lee Brown), leader of the big band group Les Brown and His Band of Renown. It is powered by a 368ci V8 backed by the correct three-speed automatic transmission. Other than $4,000 in recent upgrades, features on this Mark II include air conditioning and power steering, brakes and windows. Finished in Shenandoah Green over a two-tone green leather interior, this Mark II comes from the selling dealer with a technical manual, tire iron, vintage trim code chart and more, plus a clear title.
According to the dealer, the exterior was refinished in the original color of Shenandoah Green in the 1970s. Features include rocker moldings, driver-side mirror, fender-mounted antenna, air conditioning inlet vents on the rear fenders, and a hidden fuel filler behind the left taillight. The dealer states that the paint has minor imperfections due to its age.
A set of black 15-inch wheels with hand-assembled Continental wheel covers is wrapped in new 235/75 American Classic whitewall tires, which constitute the majority of the $4,000 in recent upgrades reported by the dealer.
The seats are upholstered in Medium Green and Light Green leather with coordinated door panels and trim. The Continental Mark II came standard with a full host of equipment which included power steering, power brakes, power windows, power seats, power vent windows, and full instrumentation including tachometer and low-fuel light. This vehicle also features optional air conditioning.
A 140-mph speedometer, 5,000-rpm tachometer, clock, and gauges for the fuel level, coolant temperature, oil pressure and amperage are located ahead of the driver. The odometer reads 88,601 miles, which the dealer believes to be the actual mileage.
Power is provided by a 285-horsepower 368ci “Y-block” V8 and backed by a Turbo-Drive three-speed automatic transmission. Engine bay features include cast aluminum Continental valve covers and the correct black air cleaner, plus a new battery.
The Continental Mark II was factory-equipped with an independent front suspension and a solid rear drive axle. Braking is provided by power drums on all four corners. A full-length dual exhaust system exits through the rear bumper. The dealer states that there is some surface rust on the frame rails.
A technical manual, tire iron, vintage trim code chart, license plate frames and fire extinguisher will be included with the purchase of the car.
