With an “atmospheric river” drenching the Bay Area on Sunday, the Santa Clara Valley Water District is offering sand bags for residents looking to prevent flooding on their property.

The water district operates five sand bag sites in Santa Clara County in the following locations:

  • Palo Alto: 1925 Embarcadero Road
  • Alviso: 5030 N 1st St. The site is behind George Mayne Elementary School and the entrance is on Wilson Way behind the school.
  • San Jose: City Central Service Yard at 1661 Senter Road
  • San Jose: Santa Clara Valley Water District Winfield Warehouse at 5905 Winfield Blvd.
  • Morgan Hill: El Toro Fire Station at 18300 Old Monterey Road

The sites, which are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, may be stocked with filled bags or with sand and empty bags, so the water district recommends bringing a shovel.

Unfilled sand bags can also be picked up at 19 other sites across the county. Proof of residency may be required at some sites. Residents can visit valleywater.org for site locations and operating hours.

The water district recommends using a plastic tarp between your home and the sand bags to prevent water percolating between the side of the house and the foundation. Sand bags should be placed tightly against one another.

For more information about how to place sandbags, residents can visit the water district’s FloodSAFE guide for homeowners.
