SAN CARLOS — Police said they arrested a San Francisco man Saturday morning after he assaulted another person and barricaded himself inside a home.

About 6:04 a.m., deputies from the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of an assault on the 300 block of Dartmouth Avenue, according to a news release. A man there was being treated by fire and medical personnel for a large laceration to his head.

The sheriff’s office said the 42-year-old suspect broke into the victim’s home and attacked him before barricading himself inside the residence. The suspect and the victim knew each other and the attack was not random, authorities said.

Sheriff’s deputies were unable to de-escalate the situation themselves and called for help from the sheriff’s Crisis Negotiation Unit and the county’s Psychiatric Emergency Response Team, who came to the scene and continued attempts to de-escalate. The suspect was eventually taken into police custody without the use of force and was booked into the San Mateo County Jail on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and first-degree burglary with a person present.
