A crash earlier in San Mateo left a college student in “excruciating pain” in a hospital ICU, according to an online fundraising page set up to help her.
The GoFundMe page says Michelle Urzua, 20, and a friend were driving down El Camino Real around 1 a.m. Nov. 21 when they were allegedly struck by what the listing says was a drunk driver. Urzua, the eldest of 4 children, who is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in child development, suffered from “broken ribs, hips, pelvis and leg as well as a fractured sternum,” according to the post.
The proceeds from the GoFundMe were earmarked to go to Urzua’s recovery expenses. As of Tuesday morning, the post received more than $12,000 in donations, more than half of its goal.
San Mateo police did not immediately respond to a Bay Area News Group request for comment on Tuesday morning.
A San Carlos couple was killed on the same road earlier in the month in Redwood City. Two drivers, suspected of participating in a “speed contest,” were charged with two counts each of second degree murder.
