OAKLAND — A San Jose man has been sentenced to 25 years to life in state prison for murdering a rival gang member amid a 2016 feud that included four homicides and 10 nonfatal shootings, court records show.

Norberto Villareal, 31, was sentenced Oct. 28, a year after he was convicted of murdering Dariel Arreola, 28, of Manteca. Police attributed the shooting to a violent feud between gangs in Union City and Hayward, and say that Villareal killed Arreola with a .40 caliber pistol outside the San Leandro Senior Community Center in May 2016.

Arreola, reputedly a member of the Hayward gang in the feud, was shot seven times in the head and torso, according to a San Leandro police probable cause statement. Two teen boys, aged 14 and 16 at the time, were arrested and cahrged as juveniles.

Villareal’s co-defendant, Gabriel Martinez — initially charged with murdering Arreola as well — was convicted last year of robbery with a firearm in a separate incident. He has been sentenced to 21 years in state prison.

Both men are appealing their sentences, court records show.

Villareal was also a suspect in a December 2015 shooting where the victim, a member of the rival gang, was shot at in Hayward while driving with his girlfriend and their 1-year-old daughter, court records show.
