REDWOOD CITY – Hoover Elementary School and a Boys & Girls Club were locked down Friday afternoon after gunfire erupted at nearby Hoover Park, police said.

Officers were called to the park about 3:35 p.m. for a report of shots fired, the Redwood City Police Department said in a statement. According to one witness, a man fired a handgun at another man as the two walked toward each other in the center of the grass field. After several shots were fired, the men fled from the park.

A small number of parents and children were at the playground at the time, police said.

Roughly two minutes after the shooting, the Boys & Girls Club located 50 yards northwest of the park called police to report two windows had been struck by gunfire. No one at the club was hit, but shards of glass caused an injury to one staff member’s hand.

Staff members locked the club down. Hoover Elementary School, located just south of the park, was also locked down. Officers later escorted 26 students and 15 staff members out of the club and 300 students and 40 staff members out of the school.

A contingent of more than three dozen law enforcement officers set up a perimeter around the park, club and school, and searched for the suspects. No suspects were found, but officers recovered several 9mm shell casings from the field, according to police.

Based on witness statements, police concluded the shooting was between the two men and there was no ongoing public threat. No area hospitals reported receiving a gunshot victim.
