PLEASANTON — A person died Sunday after their vehicle left Interstate 680 lanes, authorities said.
Shortly before 6:30 p.m., California Highway Patrol officers received word of a possible collision and smoke rising from beside southbound I-680 lanes at the Bernal Road off-ramp, a CHP officer said.
When officers arrived, they found a vehicle that had driven off the road and struck a tree before catching fire. That person was pronounced dead at the scene.
Livermore-Pleasanton Fire Department firefighters also responded to the scene aboard five engines and a truck with two battalion chiefs to put out a small crash-related vegetation fire within minutes.
The driver’s identity was not immediately available from the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office coroner’s bureau, pending next-of-kin notification.
CHP officers worked with Pleasanton police to close the slow lane just north of the off-ramp, and issued a Sig-alert just after 7:15 p.m. closing the roadway’s right-hand lane for an investigation.
The alert was lifted at 8:32 p.m.
