OAKLAND — A 16-year-old boy was shot in an apparent attempted carjacking Friday night in East Oakland, while a 17-year-old boy was shot earlier in the day near a high school in West Oakland, authorities said.

Both teens were in stable condition. The shootings are not related, authorities said.

The 16-year-old told police he was in his vehicle about 9:06 p.m., stopped at a stop sign at 73rd Avenue and Hawley Street, when a male with a gun approached on foot and tried to carjack him.

The boy started driving away and was shot and wounded by the suspect. The victim was able to drive to another location, where he was driven to a hospital by someone else.

The 17-year-old was shot about 3:49 p.m. Friday in the 900 block of 26th Street near McClymonds High School. Police have not said if the young victim was a student at the school, which was not in session at the time. The victim had gotten into a dispute with another person and was shot twice in the torso.

He was taken to a hospital, where he was initially listed in critical condition but was later upgraded to stable condition. Police are trying to determine what the dispute was about.

No arrests have been made in either shooting.

Police and Crime Stoppers of Oakland are offering up to $5,000 for information leading to the arrest of the suspects in each shooting. Oakland police can be reached at 510-238-3426 and Crime Stoppers at 510-777-8752.
