Petaluma police arrested two suspects in an attack that killed a 23-year-old Novato man over the weekend.
Alejandro Sanchez, 23, of Petaluma, was arrested Thursday in San Pablo on suspicion of murder and is being held without bail at the Sonoma County Jail, records indicated.
He’s scheduled to appear as early as Monday in Sonoma County Superior Court.
His twin brother, Luis Sanchez, 23, was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon involving a baseball bat, according to the Petaluma Police Department.
The two are linked to the death of Adolfo Martinez Pena, who was killed early Sunday in downtown Petaluma. He was the city’s first homicide victim in 2022.
A Petaluma police officer found Martinez lying in the road near a parking garage in the 100 block of Keller Street. He had “multiple puncture wounds,” police said.
Officials performed CPR and used an automated external defibrillator on Martinez, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
A friend reported just before 2 a.m. that Martinez had been attacked with a baseball bat, according to police. The friend told detectives an argument had escalated to a fight before the victim was attacked.
Police were trying to determine where the parties were when the argument began.
Loved ones have set up a makeshift memorial for Martinez where he died. They described him as a kind man who enjoyed skateboarding and didn’t get angry with people.
His 22-year-old girlfriend, Cindy Rodas, of Novato, told The Press Democrat this week Martinez didn’t deserve to die.
“He was always so happy. We’re all here celebrating him. We love him so much. He was such a cool person,” she said.
Police are still investigating the killing and want witnesses or anyone with footage to come forward.
