From the moment we’re born, we are surrounded by a mix of true and false information. In the past, distinguishing between them was relatively easy, but over time, it has become increasingly difficult. The advent of generative AI technologies has ushered in a new era of entertainment, solutions, and, unfortunately, a new level of “fakeness.” Today, texts, images, and videos can be created entirely from scratch or manipulated to the point where it’s nearly impossible to discern what is real and what is not.

In an age where fake or manipulated information can spread around the world at the speed of light, it’s incredibly challenging to undo the damage caused by fake news, especially after it has been judged by the “internet’s supreme court” of public opinion. Every day, we witness information being twisted to serve the interests of its creators, shape the beliefs of groups, or even influence entire nations. Increasingly, we see careers and personal lives destroyed by false information, with little chance or time for the victims to defend themselves.

How can we protect ourselves against this growing threat? More and more people are retreating from digital life because it can be harmful. Maintaining an online presence is becoming a challenge, as we are constantly bombarded with news and “facts” that paint an ever-darker picture of the world. People are distancing themselves from news sources because they no longer know which “truth” to believe.

The evolution of “deep fake” technology adds another layer of complexity. Criminals are developing new strategies, and we are approaching a time when a video call with someone we trust could turn out to be an interaction with an imposter. Attacks using deepfakes are becoming common practice, and companies must be aware of these new scam methods. Recently, a finance worker paid out $25 million after a video call with a deepfake posing as the company’s Chief Financial Officer.

As we navigate this new landscape, the importance of digital literacy and critical thinking cannot be overstated. It’s essential for individuals to develop the skills needed to critically evaluate the information they encounter online. This includes questioning sources, seeking out multiple perspectives, and being aware of the technologies that can distort reality. The more informed we are, the better equipped we will be to defend ourselves against the growing tide of misinformation and manipulation.
