When you make a custom car, you also take something: your chances. You may create something others loathe or craft something that every other owner of that model wants their car to look like. I’d say our Pick of the Day, this unique 1956 Lincoln Capri, is 100 percent in Column B.
According to the selling dealer in St. Louis , Missouri, this low-slung looker is the work of Marty Wells, who combined parts from a Capri and a Premiere. He absolutely nailed the stance. The front fenders already had a forward-leaning look to them, but Wells added to the illusion of movement even more by significantly lowering this Lincoln with a four-inch roof chop and an air suspension.
There’s still plenty of brightwork, which guides your eyes from the thick whitewalls down the sides of the vehicle, across the rear wheel skirts, and to the cathedral taillights. One thing you won’t see are door handles, which have been replaced with remote door poppers and hidden redundant controls on the door panels.
Then there’s the color. This build would stand out in beige, but luckily, Wells chose the attractive and distinctive combination of pale turquoise and white, which doesn’t seem out of place on a car of this age.
The inside of this car matches the outside in terms of colors and customization. Instead of going with a bunch of aftermarket gauges and a touchscreen display, Wells completely transformed the dash into two curvy, pinstriped halves that meet at the central multigauge above the unique center console. I don’t know if he’s a fan of cats, but he might be because that steering wheel sure is shaped like a cat’s head. There’s substance to go with all of that style: power windows, a tilt steering column, power steering, air conditioning (as if this car wasn’t cool enough already), and a 1,000-watt, 11-speaker audio system.
There’s more pale turquoise and pinstriping under the hood, which covers a massive 460-cubic-inch V8. That’s connected to a C6 three-speed auto and kept in check by power four-wheel disc brakes. If you end up buying this $99,500 stylish custom Lincoln, it won’t matter how fast you go – people will look at it, even if they have to whip their heads around to catch a fleeting glimpse.
