The Pontiac GTO is thought by most to be the original muscle car. A project that, according to legend, was developed by John DeLorean after he learned about what local street racers had done to their cars, which was, basically, shove a powerful full-size car engine into a midsize car. That combination worked and ever since then, the GTO has been the stuff of legend.

Featured on AutoHunter is one of these legendary muscle cars, a 1966 Pontiac GTO convertible

The seller describes this GTO as being powered by a rebuilt 326ci V8 mated to a four-speed manual transmission. It comes finished in red with black pinstripes and equipped with a black convertible top over a black vinyl interior.

The exterior of the car looks to be in excellent condition, with both the paint and the brightwork appearing to be in great shape. In addition, the convertible top, including the rear window, seems to be well cared for. The car rides on 14-inch Rally I wheels with chrome trim rings and period-correct Firestone Wide Oval redline tires.

The black vinyl interior is nicely done and features period-correct patterned material on the bucket seats. It also features a correct wood steering wheel, wood dash, very cool center console, and an upgraded radio. Instrumentation includes a factory 120-mph speedometer, 7,000-rpm tachometer, fuel gauge, and coolant temperature light. The seller has added a tasteful set of AutoMeter gauges for the amperage, oil pressure, and coolant temperature.

Under the hood of this GTO, the original 389 V8 has been replaced with a rebuilt 326ci V8 featuring a tri-carb setup and code 092 heads. That is backed by a four-speed manual gearbox.

The restoration of this car looks to be quite good – even the underside appears to be devoid of weird patches or evidence of rust. All in all, this GTO seems like a really nice driver-level specimen. Sure, it has had an engine replacement, but that only makes this car available at a more attractive price.

If you have always wanted a first-generation GTO convertible, this one might be just the car to buy. Consider it a Christmas gift to yourself (you know you deserve it). If this is your plan, you should act quickly because the auction for this 1966 Pontiac GTO convertible ends Monday, December 9, 2024 at 12:00 p.m. (MST).
