In the category of modern high-performance roadsters, in my opinion, there is no better buy than the first-generation BMW Z3 M Roadster. Consider that these cars are from the BMW M group. They all came standard with high-performance suspensions, brakes, and engines. Next, add reliability, strong performance, a great-sounding BMW inline-six engine, and the ability to service the car yourself. Finally, don’t forget the retro/modern styling (which I think looks better every year) and a wonderful and comfortable sports car interior, and you have a great addition to your garage.
Many BMW “experts” will tell you that the only Z3 M to get is the second-series model, but I beg to differ. To me, the price difference for the performance is not worth it. Yes, the later cars with the legendary BMW S54 engine have a lot more power, but that is not really that noticeable from the driver’s seat. The first-generation cars do the 0-60 mph run in 5.4 seconds and have a quarter mile time of 14 seconds. The second-series Z3 Ms are capable of a 4.7-second 0-60 and a 13.1-second quarter mile at 109 mph. I do not think this justifies the price difference nor the increased service needs of the later cars.
Today, the car we are spotlighting on AutoHunter, the online auction platform driven by ClassicCars.com, is this one of the earlier models, a 2000 BMW Z3 M Roadster.
The seller describes this Z3 M as a one-owner-from-new example that is finished in Cosmos Black and equipped with a black power convertible top over a black leather interior. It is equipped with the M Performance package and leather sports seats.
The seller states that the paint and body of this Z3 M are factory-original and in remarkable condition, with no rust or signs of any repainting or bodywork. They add that there are no dents or dings and only a few minor chips and scratches consistent with careful use are present on the front bumper. The car rides on factory-original Style 40 17-inch BMW M wheels clad in staggered-width 225/45 front and 245/40 rear Michelin Pilot Sport tires.
The interior has black Nappa leather upholstery and features heated BMW sports seats, a BMW Business AM/FM radio with a CD player, full instrumentation, and a BMW M sports steering wheel. All in all, the wear on the interior looks great, with minimal bolster wear for a car of this age.
Under the hood is the BMW S52 3.2-liter I6 with 240 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 236 lb-ft of torque at 3,800 rpm. The engine compartment looks to be immaculate and the seller states that this Z3 M has been meticulously maintained since new. To me, this means that they are likely to have a service history for the car. In fact, they list some recent service items. In September 2023, the engine mounts and battery were replaced and the car was serviced. It received an oil and filter change and its serpentine belt was replaced in March 2023.
These are truly great modern sports cars and deliver performance that will leave any vintage roadster – as well as many modern ones – in the dust. Not only is the power great, but the handling is simply amazing, with tons of grip from the huge tires. I would not even consider a Mazda MX-5 Miata or Honda S2000 as an alternative to this Z3 M Roadster.
