When the time came for Motor Trend to crown its Import Car of the Year in 1987, the recognition went to the all-new Acura Legend coupe. Praised by the magazine for its handling, construction, and styling, it beat out 12 other finalists for the top honor.

Featured on AutoHunter, the online auction platform driven by ClassicCars.com, is this 1991 Acura Legend L Coupe. The car is being sold by a dealer in Highland Park, New Jersey, and the auction will end on Tuesday.

This AutoHunter listing comes about a month after the sale of a 1994 Legend GS sedan on the same platform. That car, by the way, ended up being purchased by an Acura enthusiast in Virginia who has already made a few improvements to it. The new owner plans on going to next year’s National Legend Meet. Maybe the lucky buyer of this car will show up there as well?

The Legend was a key component of American Honda’s bold decision to launch the Acura division back in the mid-1980s. It was the Acura brand’s flagship and available in both coupe and sedan forms for both of its two generations. The second-generation car took on a rounded physique, additional power, and enhanced creature comforts.

The Charcoal Granite Metallic paint of today’s featured car is attractively complemented by the tinted windows, contrasting pinstriping, decklid spoiler, and mud guards. The Ivory (Type F) leather interior presents well and it appears that the only thing changed from the factory equipment is the Sony stereo. The Legend coupe had some unique features for its time, including soft-close doors as well as power rear windows.

The press release for the 1991 Legend said, “Throughout the new Legend, the engineers strove to raise what were already high standards of quality: to design panels for more precise production, reduce clearances, improve finishes inside and out, and enhance durability.”

Engineers strove to raise the bar when it came to performance in 1991. With that in mind, power came from a 3.2-liter “Type I” V6 that was rated at 202 horsepower and 210 lb-ft of torque. This reflected a full 40-plus horsepower bump up from the outgoing first-generation Legend. The listing says that the timing belt, water pump, spark plugs, and drive belts have been replaced. According to the CARFAX, the injectors were replaced last December as well. In total, the car will come with $5,500 in service records, so the buyer can drive away with some peace of mind.

“The Legend coupe was inspired by many things,” said a 1991 magazine ad. “Other car companies weren’t among them.”

If you have ever lusted after a Legend, there’s a lot to love about this one. The CARFAX report shows long-term Texas ownership, accident-free history, and lots of recent maintenance. Place your bid today!

The auction for this 1991 Acura Legend Coupe will end Tuesday, November 19, 2024 at 11:15 a.m. (MST).
