The Chevrolet Caprice Classic was such a go-to car for taxi services and police forces in the 1990s that it may be hard to imagine there are some out there that haven’t been crashed or driven beyond repair. Fortunately, Chevy made them for private consumers, too, including our Pick of the Day, a 1996 Caprice Classic sedan.

In the early to mid-1990s, General Motors offered a variety of V8-powered, full-size, body-on-frame cars with curvaceous bodywork. You could get the luxurious Cadillac Fleetwood sedan, sporty Chevrolet Impala SS sedan, or roomy Oldsmobile Vista Cruiser wagon (in 1991 and 1992 only). The upscale Buick Roadmaster and practical Chevrolet Caprice Classic were available in sedan and wagon forms.

Unlike its working siblings, this 1996 Caprice Classic has lived an easy life. Over the last 28 years, it’s only been driven 19,857 miles. That light usage shows in the condition of the attractive (and appropriately named) Dark Green-Gray Metallic finish. If there seems to be an odd amount of space between the large, rounded body and the 15-inch wheels, that’s because (for some reason) a lift has been added, according to the selling dealer.

The Gray cloth interior is in similarly great shape and offers the convenience of power mirrors, windows, and locks as well as power front seats, a tilt steering wheel, cruise control, a digital speedometer, air conditioning, and an AM/FM/CD radio.

The included window sticker shows this cruiser comes with some choice upgrades. It rides on the optional Sport Suspension, which is put to work by what’s under the hood. The standard engine was an L99 4.3-liter V8, but this B-body is packing the 260-horsepower LT1 5.7-liter V8. That’s paired with a 4L60-E four-speed automatic transmission and makes the most of the tow package.

There’s lots of room inside this Caprice Classic for friends and family (not suspects or travelers needing a ride to the airport!) and plenty of miles ahead for the big V8 at the front. The cost of entry to that space and those adventures is $27,900.
