When the second-generation Buick Riviera debuted in 1966, its sleek design was put on display at auto shows around the country. Buick said the car was “What the gawkers are gawking at, the unbelievers are believing, and the grinners are grinning at.” An ad continued, “If you can’t get to the show for a closer look, get to your Buick dealer.”
Featured on AutoHunter is this 1966 Buick Riviera being sold by a dealer in Malone, New York, and the auction will end on Wednesday.
The Riviera established a name for itself in the personal luxury car segment from the moment it launched in 1963. It was a two-door hardtop that rode on the General Motors E-body platform and became praised for its design. The second generation from 1966-onward was wider, longer, and 200 pounds heavier. Buick was confident with the car’s confident handling by saying that the car provided “thorough control.”
Under the hood is a “Wildcat 465” 425ci Nailhead V8 that is fed by a four-barrel carburetor and was rated at 340 horsepower and 465 lb-ft of torque when new. Power is transferred rearward through a Super Turbine three-speed automatic transmission. The listing for this black beauty says that recent maintenance tasks included an oil change as well as replacement of the fuel filter and spark plugs.
According to the car’s data plate, it was originally finished in Riviera Champagne (color code S). The hideaway headlight design is a work of art. I found a video of what they look like in action. It’s entrancing to watch the quad housings pivot from behind the grill, and the feature adds to the car’s mystery and allure. Buick touted the Riviera as a “tuned car” that blended styling, performance, ride, and handling into a complete package deal.
There are few bonus points to be awarded to this car for its generous feature content. Among the options are air conditioning, a tilt steering wheel, power windows, and a dual exhaust. The bench seat has a fold-down center armrest, and a factory AM radio provides period-correct audio entertainment.
“We’ve heard it said that the perfect car doesn’t exist,” Buick said. “Well, then, may we offer you the closest thing?”
If we caught you gawking at this 1966 Riviera, it’s a sign that you need to place a bid and make it your own.
