“There’s a Ford in your future!” was a popular tagline for Ford in the mid-to-late 1940s in the postwar era as consumer demand picked up and domestic vehicle production resumed to keep pace with that demand. One of the noteworthy vehicles produced during that time was the Ford Deluxe.
The Pick of the Day is a 1947 Ford Super Deluxe 8 coupe listed for sale on ClassicCars.com by a private seller in Colorado Springs, Colorado. (Click the link to view the listing)
“My dad drove this car while in the Navy in Kansas,” the listing says. “He is only the second owner, and it has been in the family for 69 years.” The seller says that the car has been garaged continuously since 1963, and an inside-and-out restoration was performed in 2017 by Don Sprague of Golden West Enterprises.
The “Deluxe” lineup of cars first entered the Ford family in 1938 and served as a midrange placeholder between Ford’s “Standard” lineup and the luxury Lincoln cars. Marketing materials used the tagline “Ford’s Out Front” to promote the model year 1947 cars. Some of the selling factors, in particular for female target customers, were:
- Synthetic enamel paints
- Self-centering and hydraulic brakes
- A class-price-exclusive available 100-horsepower V8 engine
- Broadcloth interior
- Smart and simple door handles and window levers
- A “blissfully comfortable ride”
Ford also talked quite a bit about the Lifeguard body structure, which was all-steel and all-welded for maximum occupant protection. The chassis came rustproofed from the factory and used rugged X-frame construction as well as what Ford called “king-sized” brakes. Under the hood, power for today’s featured car comes from the car’s original rebuilt flathead V8 paired with a three-on-the-tree manual transmission. The V8 was noted for its “balanced carburetion” and four-ring aluminum pistons.
The seller says, “Great looking car – would be a great car for the right person. This car will take you back to a simpler time, when people would take Sunday drives just to get out a bit for a drive after church.” The listing includes a short video that shows the car gliding along on surface streets.
Is there a Ford in your future? Now’s the time to decide, because this fine ’47 looks like a swell candidate for any vintage Ford enthusiast.
The asking price is $25,000 or best offer, and the car will come with restoration documentation.
