SAN JOSE — A man was shot and killed early Friday near a North San Jose park, police say.

A shooting was reported just after midnight near Townsend Avenue and Park Entrance Drive, which is flanked by Townsend Park to the south and an apartment complex to the north. Responding police officers found a man inside a parked car, and saw that he had been shot at least once, according to the San Jose Police Department.

The injured man died at the scene. His name has not been publicly released pending his formal identification and notification of his next of kin by the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office, but he was listed as 27 years old.

Police did not disclose additional details, saying “the motive and circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation.”

The shooting marks the 24th homicide of the year investigated by San Jose police; the department had recorded 30 homicides at the same point in 2023.
