WASHINGTON, D.C. – A uniformed officer with the U.S. Secret Service (USSS) suffered a gunshot wound Saturday evening in Washington, D.C. after unintentionally shooting himself, authorities confirmed.
The Secret Service said a Uniformed Division officer experienced a “negligent discharge” near 32nd and Fessenden streets in the northwest section of the city just before 8 p.m. The unidentified male officer was on duty and handling his service weapon when it discharged, Fox News reported.
The officer was transported to a local hospital for treatment. His unspecified injuries were not life-threatening, according to the federal agency.
Lt. Paul Mayhair, public information officer with the USSS Uniformed Division, said there were no reported injuries to any other individuals.
The agency’s Office of Professional Responsibility will investigate the incident.
