Morning commute traffic on Interstate 680 ground to a halt Wednesday after a big rig struck an overhead sign and damaged it, the California Highway Patrol said.
The collision happened about 3:50 a.m. on northbound I-680 near the Interstate 580 interchange. According to the CHP, a dump truck hit the sign, and there was concern that the sign could fall down onto the lanes.
The CHP closed all northbound lanes to allow Caltrans crews to inspect the sign. Cars were diverted off the freeway at the Stoneridge Drive exit. The Stoneridge Drive entrance to northbound I-680 also was closed.
There was no estimated time for when the lanes would be open again.
The CHP said the collision did not cause any injuries, and that traffic in the southbound direction was not affected.
Please check back for updates.
