Cooking for books

The San José Public Library Foundation is teaming with Bay Area Chef Martin Yan, host of the hit show “Yan Can Cook” and author of more than 30 cookbooks, to fundraise for library programs that support literacy, provide career training and expand access to digital tools.

Guests at the Sept. 21 event will enjoy a five-course meal featuring Yan’s recipes, with premium reserve wine pairings provided by Bouchaine Vineyards. Yan will give a cooking demonstration and share the inspiration behind his cookbooks. There will also be a live auction as well as a performance by Chinese lion dancers. Guests will receive autographed copies of Yan’s newest release “Best of Yan Can Cook.”

The fundraiser is set for 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at the San Jose City Hall Rotunda. Tickets are $108.55-$161.90 at Eventbrite.com.

New postmaster

In his 30th year as a postal employee, Richard Keppeler was sworn in Aug. 21 as executive postmaster of San Jose.

Keppeler started his postal career in San Jose in 1994 after serving for several years as a military policeman in the U.S. Army. In 1999 he became a supervisor at the Salinas Post Office and went on to serve as postmaster of several cities including Soquel, Seaside and Santa Clara. His most recent role was as manager of post office operations.

As San Jose’s executive postmaster, Keppeler is overseeing 785,000 pieces of mail delivered to over 374,323 delivery stops while also servicing over 22,570 post office boxes. He manages 776 employees and oversees more than 600 routes.

Keppeler replaces former San Jose Postmaster Aron Jones, who was recently named district manager for the Santa Ana Postal District.
