OAKLAND — Authorities on Friday announced an arrest in a shooting earlier this month in Oakland where a father of two was wounded while sleeping in his home.

The suspect — identified as a 20-year-old Oakland man — was taken into custody Monday in Richmond, the Oakland Housing Authority Police Department said in a news release.

The Alameda County District Attorney’s Office has charged the man with multiple felonies, including unlawful firearm activity and possession of a machine gun. He is being held without bail at Santa Rita Jail.

The shooting happened Aug. 1 in the 1900 block of East 19th Street, not far from San Antonio Park, according to police. The victim, who family and authorities identified as 33-year-old Run Hua Kuang, survived but remains hospitalized.

“During this difficult time, the Oakland Housing Authority continues to remain in contact with the victim’s family while providing support and services,” police said.

According to a posting on an online fundraising page established for Kuang, he had just gotten home from his job as a delivery truck driver and was taking a nap when a bullet ripped through a wall and struck him in the head.

“His life was built upon being disciplined and devoted as a husband, father, and son,” the fundraising post says. “This shocking incident has left the entire family traumatized and in deep distress.”

The shooting remains under investigation. Anyone with information related to the case can contact the police department at 510-535-3100 or the anonymous tip line at 510-535-3155.
