Featured on AutoHunter, the online auction platform driven by ClassicCars.com, is this 41k-Mile 1975 Cadillac Eldorado Convertible.
When new in 1975, the base retail price of the Eldorado convertible was a lofty $10,354. For that kind of money, well-to-do buyers could also go with options like the Lincoln Continental Mark IV, the Mercedes-Benz 450SL, or the BMW 3.0CS. But Cadillac clinched its share of the market, selling over 51,000 Eldorados that year. One of those cars is now being listed by a private party in Owings Mills, Maryland, and the auction will end Tuesday.
The Eldorado was a significant vehicle for the Cadillac brand, with production ranging for a remarkable 50 years between 1952 and 2002.
Today, we turn our sights to the ninth generation, which ranged from 1971 through 1978. This car marked an expansion in multiple dimensions, including length, wheelbase, and weight. It rode on the General Motors E-body platform and leveraged a longitudinal front-engine, front-wheel drive arrangement. Cosmetic facelifts were performed for several years during the generation, and 1975 was the year that the Eldorado received rectangular headlights, and eggcrate grille, and open rear wheel arches as opposed to having fender skirts.
The eye-catching “Firemist Metallic” paint is the first thing we notice about today’s featured car, and the exterior appears largely original – right down to the hubcaps. The interior, however, has been significantly updated. Late-model bucket seats have been added up front, along with a full-length center console that extends all the way to the back seat and offers quad cup holders. The audio system has been modernized with a Pioneer head unit with Bluetooth, aux, and USB connectivity. The steering wheel is aftermarket.
One of the unique interior features of the cabin was its curved upper instrument panel. The Eldorado of this era also had a fiber-optic “lamp monitor” system that communicated operational functionality of the headlights, taillights, and other exterior illumination.
Under the lengthy hood lives a massive 500cid (8.2-liter) big-block V8 mated to a four-speed Turbo Hydra-Matic automatic transmission. Despite its size, this motor was rated at just 190 horsepower. The seller says that the indicated 41,232 miles on the odometer are original to the car.
I love the fact that the “dual” keys for this car (shown in photo number 84 – round in shape for the doors and trunk, square for the ignition) are the same type of keys that continued as the GM-standard through the 1980s. Even my 1986 Chevrolet Celebrity had the same ones.
Live the high life of the mid-1970s. Bid today!
