ALAMEDA — Police here are investigating the deaths of a husband and wife as a murder and suicide that occurred weeks before their bodies were found, authorities said.

The shooting is believed to have occurred in early July, but police didn’t learn of it until late July, when the man’s employer  grew concerned because he hadn’t heard from the man for some time. Police went to the home on the 400 block of Lagunaria Lane, on Bay Farm Island, for a welfare check and got permission to enter the home with the help of a locksmith, authorities said.

Inside, the husband was found deceased in a bedroom. The woman’s body was found in another part of the house with a revolver nearby, authorities said. In a study, police found a note apparently written by the woman that said “I shot him” and claimed he’d gotten violent with her, according to authorities.

Police also found the couple’s dogs in another room, with a large bag of food poured out and several bowls of water that had been made available to them. The dogs were barking and appeared distressed, authorities said.
