Ninteen sixty-six is perhaps the most interesting model year for the Oldsmobile 4-4-2. For 1966, the 4-4-2 was a performance package and not a model, but what makes it truly noteworthy is that there were two versions of the 4-4-2 package.

Opt for code L78 and you’d get a 4-4-2 with a 350-horsepower 400. Want more horsepower? A tri-carb intake was available but, rather than being a step-up from the standard engine, you had to order option code L69, which would give you a 4-4-2 with a 360-horse 400 and three two-barrel carburetors. Two code performance options, each with a particular engine!

Either package was available on a selection of mid-size models:

  • F85 Club Coupe (with B-pillar)
  • F85 Deluxe Holiday Coupe (hardtop)
  • Cutlass Sports Coupe (with B-pillar)
  • Cutlass Holiday Coupe (hardtop)
  • Cutlass Convertible

Late in the model year, Oldsmobile introduced a W30 package for L69-equipped coupes. Included in the package were a bigger cam and stronger valve springs, digger gears, and a nifty air induction system that grabbed air in the lower front bumper cavities. This necessitated the battery to be relocated to the trunk – not a bad thing, as that aided traction as well. Only 54 were built, but a kit was available to retrofit cars built before the W30 was introduced. Over the years, this kit has become known as the Track Pack.

In the below video, Muscle Car Campy gives us a ride in Andy Lappin’s Track Pack-equipped 1966 Cutlass Holiday Coupe with the L69 4-4-2 package. Among the “medium-block” muscle cars of its time, this 4-4-2 was among the strongest vehicles on the scene.
