SAN JOSE — Two men have been arrested in connection with a crowd attack on an officer whose police vehicle was punched, kicked and stomped in the aftermath of a sideshow near Santana Row this past weekend, authorities said.

The San Jose Police Department announced that officers traveled to San Juan Bautista and arrested Gabe Durbin, 26, and Tyler Durbin, 22, in connection with the Saturday evening incident Winchester Boulevard near Olin Avenue. Records show they were booked into the Elmwood men’s jail and were being held in lieu of $86,000 and $76,000 bail, respectively, on suspicion of assault on a peace officer, inciting a riot, and felony vandalism.

According to police and an eyewitness video disseminated on social media, a reserve police officer was the first to respond to a report around 7 p.m. that a sideshow that took place near the location ended after a driver hit and injured a spectator.

As the officer drove to the site, he was quickly surrounded by a crowd, many of whom were wearing ski masks over their faces. Several people started punching and kicking the SUV as the officer drove in reverse away from the crowd. In the video, one masked person could be seen jumping onto the vehicle’s hood and stomping and kicking the windshield. Police said the officer suffered minor injuries.

Two days later, police announced that a 24-year-old man had been arrested on suspicion of felony hit and run and felony reckless driving in connection with the spectator who was injured.

Police said “detectives are continuing to thoroughly investigate the incident to identify all those involved.”
