Featured on AutoHunter, the online auction platform driven by ClassicCars.com, is this 1971 Ford Mustang Mach 1.
“The all-new Mach 1 is here – ready to move you out over roads near and far in Mach-nificent style.” Yep, Ford couldn’t resist the temptation of a corny pun in the brochure for the 1971 Mustang. Dad jokes aside, it was a good-looking machine with its long, dual-scoop hood and distinctive flat-back roofline that gave the restyled model a chunky rear end that seemed ready to squat down over the rear wheels as the steed bolted away from a standstill.
This particular Mustang is waiting to gallop to its next rider. In 2021, it was refinished in a combination of silver metallic and black accents on the Ram Air hood and sides as well as a black rear spoiler.
Black is the dominant theme inside, from the front buckets and folding Sport Deck rear seat to the dashboard and carpeting, although faux wood accents do add a little visual warmth to the one-bar steering wheel and door panels. Conveniences include power steering, air conditioning, a Jensen AM/FM/CD radio, and a set of Dakota Digital analog gauges.
Unlike its New Edge descendant, the 1971 Mach 1 was available with a variety of engine options. The brochure shows it came standard with a two-barrel 302cid V8 but could be equipped with a two-barrel 351, a four-barrel 351, or one of two 429cid Cobra Jet engines, the most powerful of which had Ram Air and up to 375 horsepower with the Drag Pack option. The VIN for this Mach 1 shows it came with the 240-horsepower base 351. Although the seller doesn’t indicate the Ram Air-equipped 351cid V8 under the hood is original, the engine, upgraded four-barrel carburetor, and three-speed automatic transmission have been rebuilt.
The updates don’t stop there. The 14-inch Magnum 500-style wheels are wrapped in Cooper Cobra radial tires that were put on in 2023 – the same year the front end was rebuilt. A new power steering pump has been installed. A new brake master cylinder, power front disc brakes with upgraded two-piston calipers, and new rear wheel cylinders help make sure this Mustang doesn’t giddy up straight into the proverbial glue factory.
Even better news: In addition to throwing in a set of uninstalled rear window louvers, the seller will provide all of the…Mach-umentation…associated with the rebuilds and the tires.
