In its newest episode, ESPN “E60” reflects on the 1994 New York Rangers and how the team’s Stanley Cup victory created unforgettable memories for the city and the family of one NYPD officer.

It’s been 30 years since the 1994 Rangers had one of the most iconic playoff runs in NHL history. The team had gone 54 years without a title, leaving many of its supporters to wonder if the franchise was cursed. Among the faithful fans rooting on the team were NYPD officer Steven McDonald, along with his wife, Patti Ann, and their 7-year-old son, Conor.

In 1986, McDonald was shot in the line of duty in Central Park. He was paralyzed from the neck down and required a respirator for the rest of his life. After his injury, McDonald became an inspiration to New York for his message of forgiveness toward his assailant. He also became synonymous with the hockey team that he loved.

In “No Easy Victories,” Jeremy Schaap tells the story of the 1994 Rangers through the eyes of the McDonald family. In addition to members of the family, interviews include Rangers greats Mark Messier, Brian Leetch, Adam Graves and Mike Richter, as well as GM Neil Smith and coach Mike Keenan. NHL commissioner Gary Bettman, former Rangers broadcaster Howie Rose and former beat writer John Dellapina are also part of the story.
