BERKELEY – A possible collision involving a person in a wheelchair and a BART train was reported Monday afternoon in Berkeley, a spokesperson for the commuter rail line said.

The incident happened around 3:30 p.m. at the North Berkeley station, BART spokesperson Jim Allison said in a recorded message.

Allison said first responders rescued a person and removed a wheelchair from the tracks.

“There may have been a collision involving the train, wheelchair and possibly the individual as well,” Allison said. “We don’t have any confirmed information on how the person entered the trackway, but there is no foul play suspected at this time.”

An update on the person’s condition was not immediately available Monday afternoon.

BART police are investigating the incident, Allison said.

The incident led to the closure of the North Berkeley BART station until about 4:30 p.m., and service on the orange and red lines did not fully resume until about 4:50 p.m., Allison said.
