In 1964, Time Magazine’s “Man of the Year” was newly-elected President Lyndon B. Johnson. That same year, the Beatles held all five top spots on the Billboard Top 100 in the same week, the game show Jeopardy! debuted, and Roald Dahl’s “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” was published. Oh, and there were some hugely important new cars introduced. The Ford Mustang and the Chevrolet Chevelle were among them. Today, we get to look at a first-generation Chevelle that not only survived the test of 60 years, but lives on stronger than ever with enhanced performance and curb appeal. The car is being sold by a dealer in Lenexa, Kansas, and the auction ends Thursday.
Although performed almost 20 years ago, the car’s restoration still holds up according to the photos in the listing, and only 3,552 miles have been added during that timeframe. Powering this A-Body hardtop is a massive 468cid big-block V8 mated to a 700R4 four-speed automatic transmission. Included on the build sheet are power front disc brakes, an MSD electronic ignition system, Billet Specialties wheels, a B&M shifter, and a custom audio system.
Speaking of audio systems, this car’s model name has ties to the music industry. In 1995, a rock band chose the name “Chevelle” as a nod to fast cars. Lead performer Pete Loeffler was interviewed by Loudwire Radio in 2012 and said, “I grew up around hot rods and going to car shows – Midwest kind of thing – and we’ve got pictures of us on running boards of ’32 Fords and things like that as babies. So, it’s just something that kind of grew along the way back then, and it stayed with us. Hopefully we made the name cool again, because you haven’t seen a Chevelle in a while.”
The Chevelle solidified its state early on as a capable muscle car at a time when the segment was gaining momentum and popularity. For decades, the Chevelle name was synonymous with the muscle car movement. And 60 years later, we are glad there are still survivors like this black beauty out there. This is your chance one that has been nicely restored with all the right elements.
The selling dealer has provided a start-up video which lets us hear the big-block come to life. The car sounds as amazing as it looks, especially from the rear during a rev-session.
