HAYWARD — A woman was stabbed to death Thursday evening and her husband was later arrested as the suspect, police said Friday.
The name of the woman killed, who is in her 50s, was not immediately released.
Police identified the husband as Gary Barronga Garcia, 66.
The stabbing happened about 5:46 p.m. Thursday at the couple’s apartment in the 25000 block of Cypress Avenue, police said. Authorities received numerous 911 calls regarding a woman screaming from inside the apartment.
As officers responded to the scene, witnesses reported that a man was seen walking out of the residence where the screaming was heard; he then left the area in a vehicle.
The woman was pronounced dead at the apartment from multiple stab wounds, police said.
At about 8:26 p.m. Thursday, Garcia contacted police in another city “to report his involvement in this incident,” police said. He was taken into custody there and was later arrested on suspicion of murder.
Police have not said how long the couple were married and have not released a possible motive for the stabbing. They said more details would be released when they become available.
Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Niedenthal at 510-293-7176.
The killing is Hayward’s second homicide of the year.
