OAKLAND — A 17-year-old boy was shot at least twice Wednesday night on a cul-de-sac along Lake Merritt that has seen violence before, authorities said.

The youth was reported to be in stable condition at a hospital Thursday morning.

The shooting happened shortly after 11 p.m. Wednesday outside in the 1400 block of Lakeshore Avenue.

Police responding to reports of gunfire did not find the youth at the site. But it turned out he had been driven from there to a hospital and dropped off by people who then drove away, authorities said.

A parked vehicle and a nearby apartment building on the cul-de-sac were hit by the gunfire, but no other injuries were reported.

Police are trying to determine if the youth was in the parked vehicle when he was shot or was standing outside.

A motive for the shooting is under investigation. Police were also trying to determine why the youth, who lives in another part of Oakland, was on the cul-de-sac. No arrests have been made and no suspect information has been released.

The cul-de-sac runs from the 1200 block to the 1400 block of Lakeshore Avenue.

Since May of 2021 the cul-de-sac has been the scene of four homicides — three shootings and a stabbing — and seven non-fatal shootings.
