Voters in North San Jose will choose whether to give their independent-minded incumbent another four years on the City Council, or to go with a longtime Silicon Valley politician who served two terms on the council nearly a decade ago.
Councilmember David Cohen is running for re-election in his North San Jose district. Before taking office in 2020, he also served for 14 years on the Berryessa Union School Board. He has been endorsed by U.S. Rep. Ro Khanna and Santa Clara County Supervisor Susan Ellenberg, as well as the Silicon Valley Biz PAC.
Cohen received the South Bay Labor Council’s sole endorsement when he ran in 2020 run, but this year, the labor group is giving an open endorsement to Cohen and challenger Kansen Chu.
Cohen is the only candidate to receive an endorsement from both the Labor Council and the business PAC, which are usually at odds in their endorsements.
His campaign has raised $93,034.
Chu previously served on San José’s City Council from 2007 to 2014, then won election to the state Assembly, where he served two terms. In 2020, he lost a bid for a seat on the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors. Earlier this year, he had considered returning to the Capitol and running for state Assembly yet again, but ultimately decided to run for local office. He has raised $133,849.
