A collision that killed a pedestrian in West San Jose over the weekend occurred when a driver backing out of a driveway hit a woman walking by, police said.

The fatal incident was reported at 2:09 p.m. Saturday in the 800 block of Saratoga Avenue, just north of Belvedere Drive, according to San Jose police.

An initial investigation found that a man in a tan 2004 Volkswagen Touareg sport-utility vehicle was reversing toward the west side of the street when he hit the woman walking on the sidewalk. She was taken to a hospital, where she died from her injuries the same day.

Her name has not been publicly released pending her formal identification and notification of her next of kin by the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office.

Police said the driver stopped after hitting the woman. There is no indication that he was arrested or cited.

The collision marked the city’s eighth roadway death of the year, and the fifth involving a pedestrian victim.
