Featured on AutoHunter, the online auction platform driven by ClassicCars.com, is this One-Owner 2000 Subaru Outback Limited.
To me, the Subaru Outback’s name conveys images of a station wagon kicking up dust while romping around the Australian countryside. When the Outback debuted in the mid-1990s, promotional efforts centered around pop-culture star Paul Hogan who played Crocodile Dundee in the 1986 action-comedy film. Here is an example of one of the commercials he starred in. “You’re riding in the world’s first sport-utility wagon,” the dialogue says.
Indeed, the Outback boldly went where other vehicles had not gone before – both literally and figuratively. Subaru took a chance on the notion that people in the marketplace would latch on to an all-wheel-drive station wagon that allegedly had similar off-road capability to that of sport-utility vehicles. As it turns out, the vehicle caught on. In 1999, a second generation launched, and today’s featured car comes from 2000. It is being sold by a private party in Woodstock, Illinois, and the auction will end on Tuesday.
Showing just 60,115 miles on the odometer, this two-tone Outback is ready for plenty more adventures. It was sold new from Burt Subaru in Englewood, Colorado and according to the CARFAX, it has had just one owner. Adding to the allure of this all-wheel-drive wagon is that is comes in top-rank “Limited” trim, with features such as a power moonroof, heated leather seats, a premium audio system, and woodgrain trim. That’s a strong list of amenities, so it turns out you can travel the rugged terrain and do it in complete comfort. All said and done, the car retailed at $28,788 when sold new.
Power up front comes from a 2.5-liter flat-four “boxer” engine mated to a four-speed automatic transmission, and the powertrain was rated at 165 horsepower and 166 lb-ft of torque. This car is certainly no speed demon, but it is probably one of the best-kept and lowest-mileage examples from its era.
As some of our readers may know, the Outback lives on today and is now in its sixth generation. Subaru continues to demonstrate prowess in creating nimble all-wheel-drive station wagons and crossovers by using a proprietary and innovative “Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive” system.
In the world of neo-classic collector cars, this Subaru from Y2K easily falls into “future collectible” territory. Place your bid, grab your cowboy hat, and get ready for some Australian adventures in crocodile country.
